With the beauty industry estimated to be worth around $24 billion globally, it’s clear we hold high values as to how we present ourselves to the world. With multiple beauty companies wanting a piece of the growing industry, therein exists an overwhelming number of advertising of products claiming to turn the dullest of Cinderella’s into glowing beauties. If we turn back the clock to the methods used by our ancestors and still used by preserved cultures throughout the world, it’s clear to see just how much of a hype the industry really is. Lets keep in mind, profits are a primary focus for the majority of companies, not your health. Unfortunately this results in scores of beauty products entering the market that contain toxic ingredients that can lead to skin inflammation, burning, hormone imbalances and cancer to name a few.

We have pulled two of the best natural beauty products sworn by generations before us.

We focus on alternatives to moisturisers and exfoliators in particular. Even if you put down your commercial products for a week and trial the alternatives, you will notice a significant difference and your skin will thank you.

Coconut oil (applied in portions to areas)

This is an oil that has gained a lot of media attention with many health conscious people around the world. Natives in tropical islands utilise coconuts for a variety of dietary and beauty purposes and is incredibly valuable to their villages and economy.

coconut oil

They regularly apply coconut oil to their skin as they know that coconut oil contains naturally occurring SPF (as high as SPF 10). With a huge chunk of the beauty industry focusing on anti-ageing, coconut oil is such a powerful alternative.

Coconut oil retains moisture in the skin due to its high content of saturated fats and also contains antimicrobial properties, fighting infection and inflammation which is great for those that suffer from blemishes and acne. Packed with antioxidants which assist in the reversal of skin agers such as free radical damage through pollution and high exposure to sun. Vitamin E, rejuvenating proteins, vitamin K and other essential nutrients are also abundant in coconut oil.

Nutmeg Paste

Nutmeg

A natural exfoliator that smells great and will do your skin wonders. Another powerful antioxidant also containing anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Exfoliators are used to assist in the removal of dead skin cells and prevent blocked pores that trap oil and lead to blemishes, acne and blackheads. Rich in vitamin A, C, and B6, nutmeg also clears the skin from the inside out when taken internally.

Taking a whole nutmeg, grind it against a smooth stone slab with a little water. You can then make a paste with a small amount of honey and apply to your skin with an exfoliating glove and rinse with water. You can also use 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg powder, mixed with 1 teaspoon of honey and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon. It’s great to add exfoliation into your shower routine at least once a week.

If you are still wanting to stick with your commercial products just beware of some of the ingredients listed on the back of the bottle. A quick search of Google will reveal the truth of the toxicity of the particular ingredient.
