Also known just as Ayurveda, Ayurvedic medicine is one of the worlds oldest tradition of holistic treatment methods which are now coming to the forefront after India has given it’s gifts to the world following the beginning of trade between it and Europe. Developed many thousands of years ago, back into the mists of time, the system is based on the notion that health and wellness are dictated by a delicate balance of mind, body, and spirit. Seeing this reliance on balance shows how Ayurveda has influenced Chinese medicine. Instead of simply getting good health by fighting a disease, specific treatments are suggested to create a proper balance.

Ayurvedic Medicine?

A form of alternative medicine for thousands of years, Ayurveda is based on a philosophy of everything in this universe being connected, a philosophy we ourselves have just recently proven with our scientific knowledge! Good health is achieved as the mind, body, and spirit are maintained in harmony with the natural patterns and balance of the universe. In Ayurveda, poor health and sickness are a result of a disruption of this harmony. A number of factors can contribute to this disruption, including injuries, climate, seasonal changes, emotions, astrology, genetic defects, age, and emotions.

Either way, the practice relies primarily on basic health principles to maintain balance and promote good health. Herbal treatments of the Ayurveda among these practices are taken typically to maintain good health and correct simple health problems. The herbs used in Ayurveda are used for a very wide variety of folk uses like to support mental focus and clarity, detox the body, reduce anxiety, and to improve digestion.

Common Herbs in Ayurveda

It’s commonly seen that in Ayurvedic medicine what heals also prevents. Herbs that have been seen to restore health are often taken as preventative medicine for disease also. Ayurvedic medicine specifically relies on “classical” herbs that have been proven to be effective over time. Below are listed three of the most common and widely proliferated Ayurvedic herbs, turmeric, holy basil, and bitter melon. These herbs are very efficacious for treating and/or preventing a range of health conditions such as heart disease, inflammation, and fatigue.

Turmeric

Turmeric’s main components are curcuminoids and curcumin – compounds proven to have many health benefits. This warm saffron-colored spice is great to help with brain function, regulating inflammation, pain relief, and preventing cancer. It’s also a very effective antioxidant and a great addition to your diet!

Holy Basil

Holy Baisl, or Tulasi, is a very sacred herb to Hindus and Ayurvedic enthusiasts said to possess healing properties. They are a eugenol and caryophyllene. As such it is anti-inflammatory, anesthetic, and antipyretic. It’s great for relieving infection and removing pathogens from the body, hence its reputation as a healing and holy herb.

Bitter Melon

Many may not have heard of Bitter Melon, it’s an edible gourd like a squash it’s considered a uniquely great treatment in Ayurveda. It’s main function regulates sugar clucose in people. The treatment also reduces heart disease risk and improves the function of metabolism.

A time-tested practice, Ayurvedic medicine relies on historically-proven herbs and completely holistic treatments to promote balanced and good health and prevent as well as treat disease.
