What Is Kratom?

Kratom History- Kratom has been used in native Thailand and Indonesia as a sacred plant medicine for thousands of years.

However it was banned by the Thai government back in 1943, who openly admit that Kratom affected tax revenues from the opium trade!

The UK came up with a insane law called the Psychoactive Substances Act in 2016 and Kratom is supposedly falls under this new law.

This law banned all substances that are psychoactive, apart from alcohol, nicotine, caffeine and pharmaceuticals. What Is The Pharmacological Action Of Kratom?

Kratom has both opioid and psychostimulant-like subjective effects. The phytochemicals isolated from various parts of the kratom tree include over 40 structurally related alkaloids.

This alkaloid is the one responsible for analgesic activity that has been linked to kratom use mostly due to its potent opioid agonist property.

Although mitragynine can act on the mu (μ), kappa (κ), and delta (δ) opioid receptors, it is structurally different from morphine and other components from the opioid family.

Serotonergic and adrenergic pathways have also been involved in the effects of mitragynine, mostly due to its broad affinity to different receptors.

Kratom has an interesting and distinctly different range of effects based on the dose taken.

At low to moderate dose (1–5 g) it has a mild pleasant stimulant effect; at moderate-high dose (5–15 g) the compound has opioid-like analgesia and sedation.

What Is The Potential Side Effects and Toxicology Of Kratom

The adverse side effects of Kratom reported includes elevated blood pressure, nephrotoxic effects, impaired cognition and behaviour, dependence potential, and hepatic failure, however these seem to be at extremely high doses many times higher than you would normally take for therapeutic effects.

Leo Beletsky, an associate professor of law and health sciences at Northeastern University, challenges the FDA’s studies making a clear point that they do not hold up to any scientific scrutiny…

‘“You have to identify and isolate the effect of the drug, and the only real way to do that is through randomized controlled trials or really robust observational evidence,” he said. “We don’t have that.”

‘Beletsky admitted there was still a lot of “uncertainty” surrounding kratom, and said it warrants further research to better understand its full range of effects and possible harms. But considering there are an estimated 3 to 5 million kratom users around the U.S., according to industry figures, he added that the relatively low number of supposed kratom-related deaths  even in questionable cases like these could actually suggest that kratom is not very harmful.’

The Key Difference Between Kratom and Opioids

It is still not clear whether to class Kratom as an opioid, which is FDA’s strategy to ban the substance. Opioids kill people because mostly they cause respiratory depression. A recent report published in The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association suggests that kratom is “much less harmful than prescription opioids.” because it does not trigger respiratory depression. If you take too much opiates you stop breathing and die. If you take too much Kratom, which is no easy to do, because you only need a tea spoon to get the effects, like 5 teaspoons in one go and you may either fall asleep or vomit. The room might spin a bit, but you have probably had hangovers that are much worse!
