The body naturally produces ear wax as a defence mechanism to prevent dust and other harmful particles from entering the eardrum. Ear wax contains up to 50% fat which provides lubrication and also assists in removing dead skin and hair from the ear canal. When the ear wax has served its purpose it will travel to the opening of your ear, drying up and usually falling out. Another element of the protective properties of ear wax is its antibacterial elements. Without the presence of ear wax, we would experience dry and itchy ears.
The most common way to remove excessive ear wax is by the use of cotton tips, however on many occasions this only acts to push the ear wax further into the ear canal and can potentially damage the ear drum. Many medical professionals will advise against the use of cotton tips, due to the very many patients presenting with cases of ruptured ear drums, infection and compacted ear wax. While it is beneficial to remove built-up ear wax, it needs to be removed by way of a safe method. If you don’t frequently clear out ear wax, it will accumulate and could lead to complications such as hearing loss, discharge and unpleasant odours.
A popular, alternative method to remove wax is by using pharmacy grade olive oil. Using olive oil is a natural and safe option and is great for loosening hardened ear wax. Other than using the oil in your regular bathroom routine, it is one of the best methods to clear any existing infections in the ear. The olive oil assists in clearing toxins from the ear canal and provides a further protective layer. The oil also has a soothing effect on any inflamed tissue. When toxins are removed from the ear canal, chances of further inflammation are greatly reduced. Using olive oil to clear ear wax is also a great preventative measure for future infections occurring. However, it is not recommended to use olive oil on perforated ear drums, rather consult your general practitioner for appropriate treatment methods.
It is best to use pharmacy grade olive oil which can be found at your local pharmaceutical store. You can also purchase a pipette and syringe at your local pharmacy for easier application. Place a towel on the bed and position your head on top of the towel. Apply a small amount of olive oil (1-2 drops) into the pipette. To warm up the olive oil, hold the pipette in your hands for a few minutes. Turn onto one side and gently pour the oil into one ear, allowing it to sit in your ear for at least 20 minutes. Using the syringe, suction the oil out of your ear and clear any residue oil out with a tissue. Repeat on the opposite ear.
